I discovered this article about the Potato Orphans. Its a story about young girls orphaned during the Famine and sent as wives or maids to Australia. …

Every couple of years this man would come to Loughrea, County Galway and set up shop on the footpath outside Molloy's Harp Bar on Main Street. He was an itinerant blade grinder, or knife sharpener.
Folks would get wind he was in town and quickly a queue would…

Now I am in the public-house and lean upon the wall,
So come in rags or come in silk, in cloak or country shawl,
And come with learned lovers or with what men you may,
For I can put the whole lot down, and all I have to say
Is fol de rol de rolly O. – Yeats.
It’s probably a wince-worthy cliché to begin with a Yeats, but I feel that I must. The songs of Ireland have long since compelled me to dance to their rhythm; the fluting of Yeats and…

“Ah, my darlin, surely you've got the map of Ireland on your face.” He always dropped his “g’s” when speaking. Perhaps it was still a hint of Ireland in his voice.
As a boy, he along with enough…

When visiting the West of Ireland, consider making time to explore County Leitrim. This lesser-known gem is the homeland of my ancestors, and I first traveled there in 2008. In addition to the beautiful countryside, lakes, and waterfalls, County Leitrim is home to …

The Wild West of Ireland
All my life I have yearned for and felt a calling to visit Ireland-The Emerald Isle. And although I am hundreds of miles away, I’ve always held Ireland and my Celtic roots passionately close to my heart. It is my sincere desire for this trip to become a reality-and then my heart will finally have its rest.
Our family roots are from Clifton County, Galway (Riley). These roots were passed down…

Let me begin with a warning – I saw this show in a preview, and so there might have been changes, additions, subtractions before the show opened. I don’t think there is much room for a change in what is a very tightly and cleanly performed production, but one never knows.
As the name suggests,…

Last summer my daughter was wearing a shirt she got in Ireland at the local pool. Another kid asked, “Did you go to Ireland?” She said yes, she had just returned from vacation there. He exclaimed, “Wow! What kind of…

Ten years! My how the time has flown, it seems like that was just a few months ago.
It all started quite unexpectedly. In autumn of 2005, I was approached by friends who…

I often tell my friends that the only way I'll ever make it to Ireland is to win the Lottery or to write the great Irish-American Novel. I am disabled, and on a limited income, so there's very little chance to save up for something like this. If I go to Ireland I would like to take my 78 y.o. Mother for the mother/daughter trip of a lifetime. I would like to give her the trip that she and my Grandmother had always hoped to make to my Great-Grandmother’s home. I remember my Great-Grandmother.…

There are many surprises to be found in Ireland's "Wild West," and one for me that was completely unexpected was to see eagles and other birds of prey flying above the countryside in County Sligo.
I happened upon Ireland's Raptor Research Centre after visiting the monument…

Claire Fullerton: Language flavors everything in writing, just as it does in life.

Why in the world would I want to go to Ireland? There are so many reasons why I can barely focus to write a coherent response.
Ireland has always been a place of great intrigue to me for as long as I can remember. I was born with red hair. No one else in my classes in elementary school had red hair. I felt like a pariah. I didn't fit in at school, and even though my father had red hair as well, I didn't fit in there either.
For most of the people in my small class, matters of…
