Sean, we'd relish getting this story, perhaps the more detailed version, on TheWildGeese.Irish, and learn more about the festival AND your unique Irish story as well.
A few years back I drove all over "Ballyneety" looking for Sarsfield's Rock. I couldn't find anything online giving any exact directions beyond it being in "Ballyneety," but I figured that once I got there I'd find a sign, or some helpful local to locate it. Alas I drove all over the town and found no signs for it, and the locals I asked about it had no idea where it could be. After several hours of trying, I finally gave up. Then this year, since we were going to be in Co. Tipperary I thought I'd try again. And low and behold I discovered the problem. Amazingly, there are TWO Ballyneety's in Co. Limerick south of Limerick City and I was looking in the wrong one. So for anyone trying to find it, the Ballyneety you need to find is far smaller than the one just south of Limerick City. It's barely over the border from Tipperary. If you go south on N-24 from the Limerick City area and take the right hand turn on L-5050 shortly after passing through Pallas Grean, you should find it. I believe there may be a sign there, but I found it coming up from the south, so I'm not sure. The monument will be right next to the St. Brigid's Catholic Church at the intersection when you reach the OTHER Ballyneety.
