Ireland and Colombia: So Different, Yet So Much the Same

When I woke to my first St. Patrick’s Day in Colombia, I grabbed my laptop before I’d even got out of bed and Skyped home. Through the magic of the Internet, I was suddenly transported to my parents’ dining room table. My mother and aunt, resplendent in green, with shamrocks pinned…

Friday the 13th: Is it Still Scary in the 21st Century?

There are 12 months in a year, 12 inches in a foot, 12 signs of the Zodiac, and most multiplication tables go up to 12; and so one more of any of these would make 13. The modern day fear of 13 is based on Norse mythology: 12 gods were dining at Valhalla (where gods go when they…

World War Veteran - Victoria Cross and name changes

This week, I finished an index for all the names on all the stones in Rathdowney, Laois(Queen's Co) and I head of into town to go to the graveyard to begin checking the 1300 or so names and with my new magic torch hopefully be be able to read the bits I had a problem with.

As I get into the town, I wonder to myself if an acquaintance of mine who is also director f a funeral home would be interested in the index so I call to ask him.  "Ah Jane", ses he......"I have an index.  I keep…

Realizations--of connections and dreams

’ve been thinking about connections lately. Every time I get a few quiet minutes I find myself trying to form a picture of Rose in my mind. I remind myself that she was a woman of the late nineteenth century and not the mid twentieth. So I work my way back through the generations: my mother, who can talk to anyone and is loved by everyone; my Grandma Diddy, fashionable and elegant, but who loved to meet us at Union Station in costume; Grandmommy Mary Rose, who followed her Navy husband all…

Who were Rose and James?

My grandfather, whom I called Bobo for reasons I don’t quite understand, was a fascinating man. They tell me he trained to fly bombers in World War II, but after he bombed the chicken coop it was decided that he would be more helpful to the war effort working at a desk. Bobo was a teacher, but after the war he went to law school and eventually was elected as a county judge. Never one to get into a rut, he tried out a variety of professions, often spending his summers taking classes at…
