For Erin and America - James McKay Rorty

AN IRISH HERO OF THE BATTLE OF GETTYSBURG

We dug him a grave near his own shining cannon,

And laid him therein with his sword by his side,

Far away from his home by the fair flowing Shannon,

In the strength of his years and the flush of his pride ...

-- From "Captain O'Hay" a poem dedicated to

James McKay Rorty by Michael Scanlan, June, 1887

'Born a Soldier': Myles Walter Keogh - Part 3 of 3: Riding With Custer Into Eternity

By Brian C. Pohanka

The veil which conceals the future seems to be removed, and a glance, short and fleeting as the lightning flash, is permitted us into the gloomy valley before us.

'Born a Soldier': Myles Walter Keogh - Part 2 of 3: Conquering The South and The Plains

By Brian C. Pohanka

All the bright aspirations of a soldier's glory, all my enthusiasm for the pomp and circumstance of glorious war, fell coldly upon my heart; and I looked upon the chivalry of a soldier's life as the empty pageantry of a dream.

-- From Charles Lever's 'Charles…

'Undaunted Courage': The Irish at Fredericksburg

In 1862, the second year of America's Civil War, Meagher's Irish Brigade made two of the most gallant charges in American history, crashing bloodily against a Confederate strongpoint at Antietam's "Bloody Lane" and, 87 days later, attacking Confederates, many Irish, behind Fredericksburg's "Stone Wall." WGT is proud to present the story of the Irish at…
