Liam Neeson packs New York's tribute to Irish heritage

New York -- Actor Liam Neeson helped draw an overflow crowd to New York’s City Hall last night as he became the seventh recipient of the City Council’s Thomas Manton Irish Man of the Year Award. Previous recipients include Senators Ted Kennedy and George Mitchell, city sanitation worker and Gaeilge instructor Ed…

Shanghai to Guadalcanal

The Life and Times of Liam O’Donnell, volume 5 of the Irish-American Story, covers from the end of WWI through to the end of WWII; a period quickly fading from memory. One might wonder how I bridged the awesome gap from our involvement in China during the 1930s to the Pacific campaign in 1942. The answer is easy … I introduced a fictional character to someone who had been in both…

Former Irish PM praises Home Ruler John Redmond in NYC

New York -- Friday, with Irish heritage making headlines throughout the world, New York publicist Terry Rooney, with little fanfare, held his 27th annual celebration of Irish heritage, at venerable Manhattan eatery Sardi’s. The self-styled ‘toast of Broadway for 90 years.” Sardi’s is famed for the hundreds…

My Irish History - Boyd's of Ireland

This is what I know of the beginning of my family. David Boyd (son of Robert Boyd) was born 17 Jun 1737 in Ireland. He was buried 11 May 1815 in Fishing Creek Presbyterian Churchyard, Chester, South Carolina, USA. He married his first wife in Ireland, (unknown name, maybe born about 1760). She died about 1769 in South Carolina. He married…

By Maryann Tracy

Producer / The Wild Geese ‘Kitchen’

I'm no beer aficionado, but I have had a few in my day, and I can tell you, the goings-on in the craft-beer industry is pure craziness. On St. Patrick's Day maybe I'll have only one, but it better be something that tastes like beer, not that…

My Irish Story James Francis Smith, author of The Irish-American Story Series

The grandson of Big John Meehan from Sligo, Mary Ellen McLaughlin-Keane from Galway, Bridget Munnelly from Mayo, and Matthew Smith from Cavan ended up with the least recognized Irish name of them all. I can’t begin to tell you how many times, I’ve been asked, “Smith, huh! English … right?” When I meet up with my ancestor Mac an Gabhann—the one who anglicized our family name to Smith—he…

Ghosts of My Irish Past

recently, I was able to trace my family from Seattle, Washington and all the steps they took from the home in county Laois. All my life I never knew where my family came from... just Ireland. I feel pretty good about bringing my family back to life....and in my imagination I could really feel who these people were. It also helped to watch period shows like "Coppers" and "Boardwalk Empire" I read books on the history of Ireland and America in the 1800's and early 1900's... The journey was so…
