Recovering and Refocusing, and a Change in Format

Recovering from a stroke provides a fellow time to consider his future. I plan to make 2 changes as my 83rd BD rapidly approaches.  Sorry folks, but the JFK Encyclopedia is out the window, along with my sporadic posts to Facebook, Wild Geese, Linkedin, Irish Abroad, and my blog.  I'm not going away, at least not yet – just refocusing. In the very near future, you will both see and hear me on YouTube video. I'll let you know soon (that is as soon as I get making videos down.)My YouTube video format will be simple, 7 to 10 minutes in length.:I'll explain why I had included a particular passage, or why I highlighted an event, perhaps by asking a question then reading a few paragraphs describing the event. For example:“How many among you know that Israeli's Moshe Dayan personally observed, and commented on a 1966 American military operation in Vietnam?”The answer arrived in a letter to Rory O'Donnell, then a newspaper reporter. You'll find it on pages 445-447 of Rory O'Donnell and the…See More

Vietnam – “A Prayer for Pierre”

Vietnam – “A Prayer for Pierre” – post 8/7/2016Excerpt from Rory O'Donnell and the KennedysA Different Outlook, by Rory O’Donnell, July, 1954, Evening Bulletin For the remainder of my life, I’ll wonder about my brother Liam’s last thoughts when in 1945 his plane plunged into the Sea of Japan.  So too, will I wonder about the last thoughts of those valiant defenders of Dien Bien Phu.  To understand their frustration, we need to put ourselves in their place.  Imagine yourself as Pierre, a fictional officer—veteran paratrooper, small of frame, as Frenchmen tend to be.The light fog lifted and the Dakota readied in position over the drop zone, deep in communist-held territory.  Pierre faced his squad of foreign legionnaires, repeating the dream of General Navarre, “We secure the borders of Laos, engaging the Vietminh on our…See More

Excerpt - Fredericksburg, December 13, 1862

Smith's Post July 30, 2016From: The Civil War's Valiant IrishJames Francis Smith, Author Fredericksburg - Saturday, December 13, 1862BrianApproaching in the form of dark shadows, death squads stripped clothing, shoes, and blankets from the dead before bayoneting those still breathing. Deciding to die swiftly, Brian rolled on his back to be in position to kill one more rebel. But it was the brogue that stopped him.“Jasus, be careful where you step. These are Meagher’s boys see the boxwoods. Treat ‘em with respect.”He lay perfectly still, hoping Jerry would do the same to avoid being killed by a bayonet. “Me name’s Brian, I’m from Cavan and you?”“I’m a Cork man meself. Mallow. Name’s Michael Sullivan.”Brian laid his rifle down and sat up to converse properly with his fellow Irishman. “Jeremiah here is from Skibbereen. I swore…See More
