Wicklow town has a cute celeb who we discovered on a walk-about in the town during our trip last week - Sammy is a young male seal who has been visiting the south quay of Wicklow town harbour since June 2013. Initially Sammy followed the local fishing boats into the harbour so he could feast on the throw offs from the boats. But Sammy quickly developed a friendship with a local fishmongers, 'The Fishman', who feed him herring and mackerel. Sammy has a daily routine of appearing at 9am, 1pm and 4pm looking for his feed and seems to enjoy the attention from locals and tourists. Sammy has become such a notoriety in Wicklow town that there is even a 'Seal' sign at the place where he always appears (opposite the fishmongers!). If you are ever visiting Wicklow town pop over to the south quay to meet Sammy the Seal!

Sweet! Maybe Sammy will become as popular as Fungie of Kerry ;)
Very poignant, this -- the bond between people and animals always moves me profoundly, and never more so than after the murder of Cecil the Lion in Zimbabwe. Clearly, Sammy feels safe among the visitors and residents. That he understands that is very poignant indeed. Thanks for sharing this, Shauna, John! Anything on sale this month, BTW?
I've yet to get to Dingle to meet Fungie, some day!
Yes the news of Cecil was dreadful. Sammy certainly does seem to be at ease, although I felt he might be a bit lonely on his own, I don't know much about Seals and I wondered do they like solitary life or prefer to be with other seals.
Mix of items on sale this week, here's the link - http://totallyirishgifts.com/index.php/totally-irish-gifts-sale.html
Sammy may yet inspire his own motion picture or children's book. You heard it here first!
He does indeed appear to be enjoying the celebrity status . I love watching animals interacting with each other and with people. We all share a common bond --- this earth belongs to all of us .
I was going to comment by writing "This piece on Sammy the Seal has absolutely made my day," until I saw what Gerry Regan so aptly contributed! Gerry is correct, of course. And what I love so much about seals are their eyes; something otherworldly, innocent, yet all-knowing about them. Somehow serves to keep me humble and in check, and brings out every maternal instinct I ever thought about having, if you gather my meaning.
Well said Claire - I gather your meaning completely!!
