Sovereignty, Lore, and the Blood Sacrifice: The Realities and Reinventions of Pre-Colonisation Ireland

Posted on October 28, 2026 at 10:32am 0 Comments

Before conquest and colonisation transformed Ireland, the island was home to a sophisticated Gaelic civilisation governed by native law, kinship, and local sovereignty. Yet the Ireland remembered today is often as much a creation of nineteenth-century poets, folklorists, and revolutionaries as it is of medieval reality. From the kings of the…

Refusing the Royal Irish: How Fenian Panic and Financial Crisis Ended Brisbane's British Garrison

In 1869, Queensland made an extraordinary decision: it declined to subsidise a British Army regiment earmarked for Brisbane's Petrie Terrace barracks. Driven principally by financial pressures but unfolding amid the turbulence of the Fenian scare, the decision ended Brisbane's imperial garrison era and helped set Queensland…

Yet living near Suncorp Stadium has taught me that his significance lies elsewhere. He fills stadiums, supports local businesses and helps sustain communities like Caxton…

My Generation Was the Last to Leave Ireland

Posted on October 25, 2026 at 11:49pm 0 Comments

The digital revolution brought home closer than ever before, but it also complicated the question that has always faced emigrants: where do we truly…

Hi, Tim.

Just wanted to extend a bit of a belated welcome here to The Wild Geese.  Hope you've had the opportunity to look around the site to see what's on offer.  Of course, there is even more to come.  It's a great little burgeoning community with loads of interesting folks enjoying the discussion of all-things-Irish.

Hope to hear more about your own Irish connections here in the days ahead.

Thanks, Tim ... and welcome aboard!

Anything like that  happen in Perth, or other cities. Where is the largest enclave of  IRISH IN AUSTRALIA? Up here New York and Boston get a lot of ink but Chicago and Philly (counties around) have the most.Irish.
