Post #4: Ireland’s Home Rule Surfaces

PJ

PJ opened Reed’s latest post wishing his life were as uneventful as that of his friend. Then, reading the letter, he decided that of the two, he may have the better of the bargain.

Dear PJ,

Since locking up my bedroom and study, things have quieted down somewhat. Much to my better judgment, I’m now the custodian of the local Irish Republican Brotherhood’s records. Where could they be more secure than in the rectory? Word has it that one pastor even has IRB arms stored in his church’s belfry.

My young friend, Michael Collins, of whom I wrote, is the one who got me involved. No more than yourself, he has a strong dislike for the Catholic hierarchy, mentioning on more than one occasion his want of their eradication. I warned him not to jot down such sentiments—for letters have been known to fall into the wrong hands. Nor does he have any love for the Irish serving in England’s parliament, considering them pawns of the British. To him, home rule is nothing more than crumbs cast from the royal table. It’s full independence or war.
