Cúirt Launches in Presidential Style

The 2013 Cúirt International Festival of Literature kicked off in style last night as Ireland's President, Michael D. Higgins, officially opened the festivities with a speech at Hotel Meyrick in Galway's city centre.  The main event for the evening were the reading by well-known authors, Seamus Heaney and Michael Longley.  This was a highly anticipated event -- so much so that tickets were sold out well before the festival began.

Thursday promises to be a day filled with excellent literary opportunities.  You can follow our live, on-site updates and real-time photos via our Twitter feed.  For now, check out a brief piece by The Irish Independent which highlights the launch of the festival:  Higgins Holds Cúirt as He Opens Literary Celebration

I wish I could have been there! I still have a cowboy hat to deliver to Michael. I had promised him one after he attended one of our lectures back in 2005. Mine didn't fit him so well. It did make for some great laughs though!

I take it the hat was too big for him, Bit?  Michael D. is one seriously small fellow!

Yes, Ryan....but only by a size...I am not so large meself... It worked out with a few dinner napkins in the band to fit him well enough...at least it wasn't sitting on his ears!
