It is New York City and the Civil War is brewing. Norah McCabe, an Irish immigrant who escaped the Famine as a child, is now a young widow with a daughter. A milliner, struggling to survive in tumultuous times, Norah meets Abraham Lincoln, befriends the extraordinary African-American woman Elizabeth…

It is a frigid-2 degrees morning with glittering sun-gold snow mounds and I am in need of prayer. I’ve been weakened by the flu and the vicissitudes of life. And yet I am hopeful and grateful this day, even if another foot of snow looms ahead. It is St. Brigid’s Day, February 1st. And because freedom to believe and…

This recipe is a perfect Christmas party canapé to serve to guests, but because I didn’t have a party to host or a potluck to attend, I nearly ate the entire plate after I made them. The goat cheese filling with just a hint of basil and nuts is delicate and flavorful,…

I desire silence. I want to be free from the noise that humans make. I fear I will never be free from this noise. I'm often in the woods and I still hear a car that is miles away or a plane flying overhead. And even my own sighing and thoughts can become too noisy. The sounds of…

Cynthia, I find your voice compelling and beckoning. Sorry I didn't notice this post earlier. Please tell us about your work, especially the new novel, "Norah." We'd enjoy bringing you into one of our Virtual Sibins to discuss your work and perspectives. A tip for getting posts featured: Post a photography or image at the top of the file!
Glad you enjoyed my book, Cynthia. I know I'm going to enjoy your scones. Perhaps we have more in common: I'm originally from Newburyport, MA and I see that you're from Hampstead, NH (not sure where that is, but can't be too far!). I now live on Long Island.
My friend from St. Helena, CA sent one of your books to me for my birthday years ago and I've scribbled notes on recipes, I've used it so frequently. I love the photos, as well. It's the Irish Puddings, Tarts, Crumbles, and Fools book, but I think there's another one of your books floating around somewhere, as well. This one, however, is one I use often. Yes, Newburyport is a 40 minute drive and my husband and I went to Plum Island on Saturday to walk. In the midst of the intensity of my fiction writing, I must bake! I'm trying to do a GoFund project to self-publish my dessert/essay book. It will have paintings and a cd of music to accompany. Nostalgic recipes with an organic twist. I'd never self-publish my historical fiction books, but this book doesn't fit with a traditional publisher (and I'm not a professional chef). Now I will have to seek out more of your books. I didn't realize there were so many. Glad to meet you on this very interesting and inspiring web site.
Hi Cynthia,
I don't have a website for the novel I'm working on. Do you think I should?
My poetry book, Jerusalem Plank Road, can be found at Barnes & Noble's site and Lulu.
