Event Description

ONE-WOMAN SHOW AT IRISH SOCIETY

The first meeting of the new year for the Irish Cultural Society brings a singular program, a dramatic, first-person narration of a colorful Irish life, to the Garden City Library.  The meeting will be held on Wednesday, February 12 at 7:30 p.m. at the Garden City Library, 60 Seventh Street, across the street from the Garden City Hotel.  The meeting is free and open to the public.

The dramatist/actress guest is Eileen Cronin who will perform the narrative she has written about her grandmother, Kate Adams Nyhan.  Grandmother Nyhan lived in exciting times in Ireland, being born in the 1880s and living through Ireland’s independence movement into its emergence as an independent nation.  Eileen will portray this powerful and independent woman, a Cork woman; a mother of eight; a farmer; an entrepreneur as one of the rocks upon which the new nation of Ireland was to be built.  There will be a hint of prop and costume to help to establish the setting.

Eileen Cronin has performed on the Garden City Library stage stage as an actor with the Cill Cais Players and has performed her one woman show at libraries and other venues.  Eileen is the host of the popular “The Long Ireland Show” on Hofstra’s WRHU (88.7 FM) on Saturdays at 2:00 to 5:00 p.m.  She just celebrated her twentieth year at WRHU.  Recognizing her contributions to Irish culture, Eileen has received awards from the Queens Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernians and the Irish-American Center, and in 2011 Eileen was honored by the Cork Association as the Cork Woman of the Year.

There's a Marian Nyhan at NYU's Irish Studies Department, John. Is Eileen related?

John, any chance of posting an image here of Eileen, in her guise as Kate Nyhan?
