Fiona arrived home, knowing she’d just made an enemy of Morgan — that man’s never going to rest … not till he gets back at me—when the raised voices coming through the open door of Bruce’s study caught her ears. Taking several pieces of blank paper and a pencil, she began transcribing what she could of the conversation, beginning with Bruce’s indignant accusation that Winston Churchill was an idiot. “Seizing those ships, the Sultan Osman, and the Reshadieh, plus keeping the money the Turks paid for them, was the war’s worse blunder.”

“What would you have done?” Roger asked, sounding as if he couldn’t swallow whatever was in his mouth fast enough.

“I would’ve made some sort of bloody deal … anything … to keep Turkey neutral to prevent her from bottling up the Dardanelles. Now Russia’s supplies must come through St. Petersburg. Even you must know the Baltic is frozen half the year.”
