Rose, I use a Mac, and I just hold down the key to the vowel I want to put the "fada" (diacritical marking denoting the elongated pronunciation), and it gives me a choice of markings.  Are you using a Windows machine?  Not sure how it's accomplished on Windows.

Rose, I use Firefox, and then set it to the downloadable Gaeilge dictionary for the browser's spell-check feature. So if a word is missing a requisite accent in Irish, it give you the option to insert it. The downside, all English words are marked as misspelt too, but you can ignore those.
