At the end of next month, I will celebrate 18 years as an employee of the City of Tucson. I spent nine years on Patrol with the Police department and now work in clerical for the Fire Department.
I just spent time in the retirement office, looking at retirement payouts and end dates. I have Five years, two and a half months and 15 days.
I will retire at 56...and then it is off to Ireland six months out of the year...and a thatchie of my own, hopefully
So imagine my sadness when this perfect Thatchie was just posted up for sale... Five years too early. It is in Ballyvaughan, on the west coast with a view that takes in Galway Bay
Himself would be pleased, as the West Coast is home ground...
Though it is far too early for me to think of purchasing a home... It gives me hope that the Thatchies still exist... and do come up for sale once in while...
What is your dream of an Irish home?
Hi Bit,
I read with interest your email about living in the west of Ireland.
Way back in 1978, a New York handball friend of mine had a similar dream but I don't know if it came true for him.
I must admit it sounds like good idea to spend only half of your time here.
Re the thatched roof nowadays that could create insurance problems for you.
Matt Purcell.
Among the many problems faced by owners of Thatched Houses are the need for regular repairs, the requirement to comply with Protected Structure listing, and of course, insurance. However, with Fire retardant spray for your roof and taking the proper interior fire precautions such as a a clean and, preferably, a lined chimney, the rate can be greatly reduced. It will still be higher than regular homes, to be sure, but not too prohibitive. It also is a good idea to ask your thatcher about having a foil membrane placed on the roof beneath the thatch. They can do that when they are replacing your Thatch.
Beautiful dream of living in Ireland for 6 months out of the year. I wish I could talk my Italian husband into it. :)
