Just throwing out a line to draw in some other Sullivans like myself. Perhaps share some stories, Sullivan information, or even some DNA info.
In the southeast of Ireland, there are so many Sullivan clans that they have a second unrelated name to identify their family line. Mine is McCann, but in my father's parish of Kilgarvan in County Kerry, there are Sullivans with the second identifier such as, Goula, Rodgers, Downs, and I am sure others that I have no knowledge of. Drop a line and add ideas. Perhaps we can hook up wIth some distant cousins.
What are your thoughts??????

Every time we spend time down in Kerry and Cork, I'm amazed at the amount of O'Sullivans / Sullivans we meet, and the amount of businesses by the same name. Definitely among the family names in Ireland with one of the most densely populated areas.
Here in Kealkill, just outside Bantry, we have Carriganass Castle - the stronghold of O'Sullivan Bere - who passed the castle on his way to join the Flight of the Earls ... There are lots of O'Sullivans on the Beara peninsula in particular, and you can now follow O'Sullivan Bere's footsteps by walking the Beara-Breifne Way which passes Carriganass. We'd be delighted to welcome any O'Sullivans heading this way to find their roots!
Hi, My great grandfather was Timothy J. (O')Sullivan born in Kenmare in 1848. He had brothers James, Peter, Cornelius & Patrick and a sister Lucy. Their parents were Patrick 1802-1893 and Mary Dowling 1813-1900. i have connected with a few 3rd cousins in the area. We hope to travel to that area sometime within the next year and hopefully meet some more Sullivan/O'Sullivan cousins. With all the branches of my family tree reaching back to Ireland, the Sullivan/O'Sullivan is the only branch that I have been able to trace to a location and/or family. I hope there are more cousins out there to get to know.

HAVE YOU EVER BEEN YOURSELF ? CHRIST IT IS HARDER FOR ME TO LEAVE AND FLY HOME EACH TIME I GO OVER. I USED TO TAKE TOURS OF 4 OR 5 EACH YEAR FOR MANY YEARS, SOME FOLKS WENT WITH ME 2 OR 3 TIMES. YOU HAVE A COUSIN RIGHT NOW WHO IS THE POSTMASTER IN KENMARE, AND ANOTHER WHO IS A BUTCHER. TAKE CARE AND GOD BLESS JOHN
I was in Dublin in 1967, when I was 15. I was with my Nana, who was a Finneran, the other side of my family. Never made it down to Co Kerry. We hope to make it over there soon, but like you said, it doesn't get any easier to get in gear and get there. I have 3rd cousins, O'Connor & Daly that are decendants of Lucy O'Sullivan. The O'Connors own the Kenmare Book Shop and the Dalys are in the real estate business, I believe. And another 3rd cousin in Cork who I just connected with on Ancestry.com. A Postmaster & a butcher, how interesting. Thank you for that information, I am so enjoying this family history journey!
My Best, Diane
On my maternal side my Sullivan is Daniel Sullivan born 25/07/1872 in Ardfert. I know his father was also Daniel Sullivan and his Mother was Katherine Carroll. His brothers were Martin (1861), Thomas (1867) and Cornelius (1870). This is all I can find on this family. I know Daniel married Mary Meehan from Tralee after moving to the United States. I will be in Kerry in May 2015 and hope to find out more. I am also an O'Sullivan on my paternal side. Also a Daniel but from Limerick.
My great-great-grandmother was Honora Sullivan, born in 1858 in Kilgarvan, Co. Kerry, the daughter of Denis Sullivan and Mary Sullivan (Sullivan was her maiden name as well as her married). Honora married Thomas Lynch, and they lived on a farm in the townland of Reighcuslagh near the family of Jackie Healy-Rae. I went to Ireland in 2014 and met my grandmother's first cousin, who told me she thought we were somehow related to the Sullivan Downs. I've been keeping track of my DNA matches on Ancestry.com and have found a gentleman DNA-matched with me with quite a few Sullivans from Kilgarvan in his tree...some are Sullivan Down, Sullivan McCann, and Sullivan Goula. Unfortunately, I have no idea which of those my Sullivans would be related to, except perhaps Sullivan Down from what my cousin told me, but we don't know the exact connection. Lovely visit and a beautiful area. Kerry was my favorite among all the beautiful places we visited in Ireland.
I am of the O'Sullivan Master Clan. They are from Tousist area and the Beara Peninsula. I was there in August and we had a reunion at Teddy O'Sullivan's (he would have been a 2nd cousin) Pub In Killmackillogue. I met many cousins I had no idea about. It was an absolutely fabulous day. I hope t go back to Ireland and return to the Beara in March. There were many (O')Sullivan's in that area, some clan names that I remember are Island, Silvie and Glen.
WELL NOW = Kimberly Murphy Wilbanks = = DENIS SULLIVAN WAS A (MCCANN) SULLIVAN AND MY GREAT GRANDFATHER MICHAELS' BROTHER. ALSO, I BELIEVE HIS WIFE MARY WAS A DOWNS CLAN. THE MCCANS WERE FROM MANGERTON MOUNTAIN AND THEY ARE STILL ON THE FAMILY LAND. CURRENTLY DAN "LEO" SULLIVAN MY 2nd COUSIN WHO JUST RETIRED LAST YEAR OWNS THE HOME ON MANGERTON AND ACCROSS THE ROAD FROM HIS HOUSE ARE 4 LITTLE COTTAGES WHICH WERE THE HOMES OF MY GREAT GRANDFATHER MICHAEL AND HIS BROTHERS JOHN, DANIEL AND DENIS. YOU SHOULD GO UP THE MOUNTAIN ROAD NEXT TO THE BIG ORANDE HOUSE ON THE WAY TO KENMARE AS YOU GO UP WATCH FOR A SHARP TURN TO THE RIGHT ABOUT 100 YARDS UP IS DANS' HOUSE, GIVE A KNOCK AND SAY BELLO TO LEO AND BETTY HIS WIFE. TAKE CARE AND GOD BLESS = = = GOOD LUCK ON YOUR VENTURE. JOHN MCCANN SULLIVAN, TALLAHASSEE, FLORIDA = = = sullivansjohn@comcast.net
I have just discovered my Great great grandfather, Eugene Owen O'Sullivan, was born in Gurrane, Co. Kerry 1851. His dad was Eugene Sullivan and his mum was Margaret Brick. He had brothers Florence and Jeremiah and a sister Honora. All three boys ended up in New Zealand in different parts. My gg Grandfather, Eugene was a goldminer in Kumara for most of his life. We are hoping to visit Ireland next year, and would love to know if there would be any family still in the area.
