Hello, Joshua!

Glad you've joined us here.  O'Brien is a great name in the history of Ireland, as you surely know.  As a matter of fact, my people (the O'Rourkes) and yours are presumed to have sprung from the same line of ancient Celts way, way back.  So I guess you could say we're family. :-)

Anyhow, feel free to chime in and get involved in our budding and rapidly expanding Irish community as you see fit.

Welcome aboard, Joshua!

Joshua, failte to The Wild Geese. Looking forward to hearing about your Irish story. Any relation to the actor Pat O'Brien, star of "Angels With Dirty Faces" and so many more films? Ger

Hi Ryan and Gerry, many thanks for your kind greetings. I have done quite a lot of research on my family and have found, many interesting facts concerning the O'Briens and other Irish families I'm related to. I didn't know we were connected to the great O'Rourkes of Leitrim, I would greatly appreciate any further information if you have it. I don't know if I'm related to Pat O'Brien, though I probably am somewhere along the line, I'll do some research and keep you updated. Really fantastic community, how very lucky I am to have stumbled on it. If yous are somehow related to the families in my tree, O'Brien, O'Byrne, O'Reilly, Brophy, Finnegan, Morrin, Molloy, Drennan, Cullen, Lennon, McMahon or Shepherd, It would be great to share what ever information we have about the so said families. Regards, Joshua.

I went back and re-checked my facts on what I said above, Joshua, and I was mistaken.  Seems our two septs are NOT related.  In fact, our families had quite a lot of animosity between them at various points in history, going to battle numerous times in epic clan wars.  So, we are, in fact, enemies!  I renounce my friendship with you here and now! :-)

Seriously, though, how cool is it to interact centuries later knowing the history of our families?

Indeed they appear not to have been on the same side of the battle field on numerous occasions. The deadliest enemies of the O'Rourkes I believe were the O'Reillys of East Bréifne, a clan I am also related to. The only period our famillies seam to have fought together was during the Confederate and the Jacobite wars. Many O'Rourkes figure in the 1641 landowners list, have you found which branch you are descended from?

That's what I'm currently working on, Joshua.  I have a couple theories, but need some solid evidence to be sure.
