Event Description

IRISH SOCIETY AWARDS CEREMONY

The Irish Cultural Society will present awards to thirty nine students from high schools in Nassau County at its meeting on May 6 at 7:30 p.m. in the Garden City Library, across the street from the Garden City Hotel.  The meeting is free and open to the public.

The students won awards for their essays entered into the Society’s writing contest.  The writing project was modeled after an assignment from the New York State English Regents Examination.  Entrants were asked to write a rhetorical analysis of a speech delivered in 1943 by President of Ireland Eamon de Valera.  Four hundred and eighty-four entries competed for the Society’s thirty nine prizes.

At the meeting, portions of winning entries will be read aloud.  President Martin Kelly will acknowledge the H.W. Wilson Foundation for its sponsorship of the contest, and he will commend the teachers of the winners for their teaching skills.

The list of all of the names of the winners can be found on the Society’s web site, www.irish-society.org.  The top nine winning papers will be on the web site by the end of May, a biography of Asneath Nicholson.

The libraries of the schools participating in the contest will receive a copy of Compassionate Stranger by Maureen O'Rourke Murphy.
