As most of you know, the Irish played a significant role in baseball from the very beginning. Baseball was an important avenue for Irish assimilation into American life. Our speaker, Richard Pioreck, Adjunct Associate Professor of English at Hofstra University, will discuss Casey at the Bat and Irish assimilation. This talk was originally presented at the Hall of Fame at the 2013 Cooperstown Symposium on Baseball and American Culture.
Professor Pioreck teaches creative writing and literature at Hofstra where he created the Baseball and American Literature course. At this year’s Cooperstown Symposium on Baseball and American Culture, he presented what he discovered writing the play Say It Ain’t So, Joe about Joe Jaclson and the 1919 World Series scandal.
Come early. We expect a World Series game crowd!
