Event Description

On the 13th September 1911 teachers at the East Wall Boys school arrived to find an ominous message chalked on a wooden door - "Any boy cot going into school and not following other schoolboys examples will be killed by order Strike Strike Strike”.
Inspired by the trade union agitation in the Docklands , the boys declared themselves the ITSBU (Irish Transport and School Boys Union) and demanded "Cheaper books, No Canings and shorter hours". They even travelled to other schools to encourage them to strike and pelted 'blackleg' pupils with cabbage stalk and stones.
Though it lasted only three days , their actions demonstrate how the radical traditions of the day were rooted in the community and many pupils would go on to participate in the National and Labour movement in coming decades,
Join us for the latest in our 'Short Stories Tall Tales' , as Caitriona Ni Cassaithe recalls the events of September 1911 . Find out what inspired the pupils to strike , how were their grievances addressed and hear the extraordinary story of the globetrotting school Principal JF Homan .
Caitriona Ni Cassaithe is one of the founding members of the East Wall History Group. She is a native East Waller and was a teacher in the local primary school, St. Joseph’s Co-ed. for 15 years before taking up a position as an Assistant Professor in History Education at DCU’s Institute of Education (formerly St. Pats)
