Tragedy Visits Mayo Village on the Titanic, 101 Years Ago
One hundred and one years ago today, 14 people from Addergoole Parish, County Mayo, left for America from Queenstown (today known as Cobh) on the maiden voyage of the Titanic. Only three would survive.
These emigrants are still remembered by relatives each April with an early morning ceremony in Lahardane, County Mayo.
Left is a picture taken of the assembled Irish waiting to board Titanic. It was taken by Father Frank Browne S.J., who traveled on the Titanic from Southhampton to Queenstown. An American offered to pay his way to New York, but when Browne asked for permission to extend his trip, his superior denied the request.
The refusal saved Browne's life. The cleric's pictures are the only ones taken on the Titanic that have survived.

Such a tragic loss for a small village. How fortuitous it was that his superiors denied him the extension. In the moment, he might have been peeved about it. I am sure he was thankful after the tragedy unfolded.

Fr. Browne led a very distinguished life post-Titanic. Was a chaplain for the Irish Guards in the Great War, wounded several times and won several honors. Then went to Australia in the 30s. The negatives of his Titanic pictures were found in the 1980s in Dublin, about the same time Ballard found the remains of the Titanic.

I just finished a book about Inisfada www.inisfada.org and was shocked to see the connection to the Titanic. Very interesting. I am looking to see if the Brady family was from that area or his father was from that area.
