This song was based on letters written by the great-great-grandfather of the songwriters, Brian Hunt, to their great-grandfather. Brian, being illiterate, had the help of the local schoolmaster... The schoolmaster, Padraig MacNamara, was a good friend of John's and had promised to look after the elder and keep him informed as much as he could.

The verses span thirty two years of letter writing....
