Hi Kim,
I'm delighted to be your friend. I have additional information about Sgt. Flanagan's Civil War service with the 11th Ohio Volunteer Cavalry based at Ft. Laramie in Wyoming. I also found an entry on the 1880 census at Standing Rock reservation under James Flanigan that included information on his wife Mary and 4 children that is consistent with our family stories. I still have a gap about when he met and married my great grandmother, Mary. Perhaps you have information on this.
Regarding the Little Bighorn battle, James played a key role in saving company D from being massacred along with Custer. He shared his binoculars with his commander, Capt. Weir who wanted to join Custer in the valley. Weir saw that the Indians had overwhelmed Custer's forces and he ordered a retreat back to Reno Hill where they held off the Indians for two days. He role is noted in several sources on the battle. I hope this information is helpful to you.
Kathy
