Welcome from a few hundred miles to the north...
This is new to me and I will probably make a ton of errors before I learn how to use this site correctly.
My great-grandmother, Louisa Florence, was born in Dublin in 1867 to Charles Edward DeLacy McCarthy and Bessie McKiernan. Bessie (Elizabeth) was born in Co. Cavan to Felix and Catherine (Schrimger) McKiernan. I believe that Catherine's origins are Scottish, but I am pretty sure that Felix is Irish. I have been unable to find either marriage or divorce date for CED and Bessie but they claim to be husband and wife on Florence's baptismal record.
Charles Edward Delacy (I refer to him as CED as his name is too long to type out each time) was a student at Trinity College and when he finished his education he practiced medicine at several locations in Ireland before going to Hong Kong as a health inspector. I believe he moved there after his second wife either died or refused to go with him. His second wife was also an Elisabeth with the last name of Browne. While in Hong Kong he became ill and travelled to Australia to recuperate. There he took a job with an insurance company - again involved in the health field. In 1880 he registered as a physician with the New Zealand authorities and had practices in several different towns before settling in Wellington and marrying again to Esther Adelaide "Addie" Ellis. This couple had a son named William Ffennell DeLacy MacCarthy. (I have found the McCarthy name spelled several different ways and the changes occur depending on the type of document.) On WFD's birth certificate it states that CED was born in Kerry.
CED moved from New Zealand to Melbourne, Australia before 1900 and had a medical practice there before he took up the profession of rain-making. He died in 1909 in Australia. Addie had a daughter, Vera, but exactly who her father is an unknown to me. Vera was born in 1901 supposedly in Perth, Australia. Though I can find no divorce decree nor any marriage license, Addie "married" Lionel Van Praagh and moved with him to Mexico, then to the USA, with a lengthy stay in Cuba before the Van Praaghs set up housekeeping in New York City.
This is probably enough about my McCarthy family history for now, but I look forward to learning more about the McCarthys and their Irish roots.
