Nicholas Gray Jr. purchased land in Vicksburg on August 1,1837 from T.H.Goodall on which he built the Wexford Lodge. The home was named in honor of Co. Wexford,Ireland. Nicholas Jr.along with his family moved to California in the 1850's were he became a U.S. Deputy Surveyor. The Wexford Lodge is the only structure to survive the battle of Vicksburg, located in the Vicksburg National Military Park, Vicksburg, Ms.The house was referred to as the White House by both Union and Confederate soldiers. It served as headquarters for the 45th Illinois Infantry.The Union army also used the house in 1864 as a small pox hospital for the troops.
