Joseph P. Moakley served the public for nearly 50 years, from his days as a young enlisted man in the Navy, to his decades as Congressman representing South Boston.

He was called "Moe Jokely" by local kids but was more commonly known just as "Joe."

Moakely became a leading authority on US-Latin American relations during the 1980s and 1990s.
