SOUTHIE Irish: Michael Patrick MacDonald

The author and activist grew up in Southie.

MacDonald helped launch Boston's gun-buyback program and was founder of the South Boston Vigil Group.

His autobiography described Southie's insular neighborhood and its code of silence.

He's an author in residence at Northeastern University's Honors Program.
