Syracuse, N.Y. - At the heart of Wednesday's Celebration of Irish Culture in Syracuse is the legendary Irish enclave of Tipperary Hill, whose indefatigable spirit has come to be represented by the unique traffic light there 'where green is on top.' The "Stone Throwers" were a group of young Irish residents who in 1925 refused to allow the green to hang below the red at the now famous traffic light, located at Tompkins and Milton avenues. as a sign of their loyalty to Ireland. After repeatedly refitting the broken glass, the city finally yielded and permanently put the green on top, for the world's only green-over-red signal light.
