This photo was taken on July 2, 2014. Amelia Mary Earhart was born on July 24,1897 at her grandparents home in Atchison, Kansas. The home is located on the bluff overlooking the Missouri River. Amelia was a rebel, and an unconventional thinker with high ideals. On May 20, 1932, Amelia Earhart took off from Newfoundland; she landed in Ireland nearly 15 hours later, becoming the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean. Earhart was having engine problems and landed in a pasture at Culmore, north of Derry. When a farmer asked, "Have you flown far?" Earhart replied, "From America."
