Denis F Burke was born in Limerick 15 April, 1840. He served in the 69th NYSM during 1st Bull Run as a private. He became a 2nd Lieutenant in the newly formed 88th New York in September 1861. He was wounded 3 times and rose to the rank of Lt. Colonel in the 88th. For a time he commanded the Irish Brigade. After the war he was active in Fenian affairs and was imprisoned in Mountjoy Jail & Kilmainham before being released and returning to the States.
