Après Homage to Cork Granny, Connecting with The Wild Geese

Dramatist, actress, radio host, and raconteur Eileen Cronin, center, brought to life the colorful 83-years of Kate Adams Nyhan, her beloved Cork-born grandmother, for an audience of 60 last night on the eve of Thursday's big snow storm here on Long Island. Her presentation, hosted by the Irish Cultural Society of Garden City, was held in the village's library-based theater. Grandmother Nyhan lived in exciting times in Ireland, being born in 1883 and living through Ireland’s independence movement into its emergence as an independent nation.  Eileen wore a Cavan-made apron evocative of that often worn by her granny, a mother of eight, a farmer, a resident of Knochbrack Mallow, and an entrepreneur as well as one of the rocks upon which the new nation of Ireland was built. Kate's story poignantly evoked the challenges confronting Irish farmers and working-class people in the early decades of the 20th century. Supporting Eileen, The Wild Geese Media Partner Irish Cultural Society and Irish heritage worldwide were six members of The Wild Geese, (left to right) Clare Curtin, Kevin Westley, Jim Hawkins, Gerry Regan, Mary Grady and John Walsh.
