Victor Herbert 1859 – 1924 was Irish born, and an flamboyant supported of Irish Independance . Grandson of Irish Poet Samuel Glover , Herbert is supposed to have stayed as a child with Samuel Lover in a musical enviroment . Herbert was German educated and influenced . However when P S Gilmore died in 1892 and in 1894 Victor Herbert having been the leader of the Boston Festival Orchestra assumed the baton of Gilmore's Band . This was a measure of how good and highly regarded Gilmore's Band was internationally and within the US even after Gilmore's passing .
