Sad what it has come to... and if a petition is accepted and passed by the county Galway Council, the cottage ruins will be preserved as a pile of stones as it is now and it will become locked and not even the owner of the ruins can restore the cottage if he wished
That is actually inaccurate information 'Bit'. A RIAI Grade 1 accredited Conservation Architect who SPECIALISES in protected structures throughout Ireland has also read recent reports/comments relating to this and has confirmed that these 'reports' – on Facebook and elsewhere – contain both inaccurate and misleading information.
The derelict bungalow adjacent to the cottage can - and should - be removed.
Adding the cottage to the 'Record of Protected Structures' would not limit it being restored at a later date.
The petition you refer to is a support document – supporting a specially commissioned/professionally produced Architectural Heritage Appraisal of the location which has been submitted to Galway County Council...
Then I stand corrected...perhaps there should be a better clarification as a good many of the locals believe that this petition will stymie any sort of progress... is the AHA a public document and where can it be found for perusal?
It looks like many people may have actually been LED to believe this initiative will stymie any progress(?) The Architectural Heritage Appraisal was commissioned for and sent in confidence to Galway County Council – and will have to remain there for the time being. Some people seem to be on a mission to undermine current efforts to finally achieve something substantive regarding the cottage – after 60+ years of nothing but ruin and decay.
I think perhaps, you are right...quite a bit of misinformation being bandied about... I think it is because there seems to be so much secrecy about the whole of it... It seems to be the way of it though..not just with te Quiet Man Cottage but in regards to many derelict "historic sites"
I have fielded many a phone call and private note from local area people. They seem to think that because the property owner and I live in neighboring states I might have some influence. I am not sure that there is anyone that has any true influence. He will do what he will and that is his right.
I joke that if he is pushed too hard he might just construct a Cong Henge... and wouldn't that cause a dither
LOL!
At least you laughed... most have no sense of humour about it...
I've need my sense of humour – especially after seeing (and continuing to see) the total lies and misinformation that has been put out there about me, personally, over the past few years. No point in engaging in a pointless, and potentially destructive, tit-for-tat 'war-of-words'. I know that I approach this with total integrity. Hopefully the good people that continue to be misled will eventually see through all of the lies and false hopes they continue to be fed...
Unfortunately, when one is leading the charge, they are the largest target for the mud and arrows
My gran always told me...there are two sides to every tale...and somewhere in both are the grains of truth...find those...plant those... and the rewards will be greater...
Perhaps it is that all have the same goal...but not the same focus... or the same method to see them fulfilled
