Gerry   One of the most interesting aspects of the Irish soldier in the American Civil War is the fact: that the U.S.Army was so ill prepared that that they lacked officers and non-coms. Since there were so many Irishman with experience in the Crimea, Sepoy mutiny, and regular U,S. Army these Irishmen found it easy to enlist as non-coms or as commissioned officers. Perhaps the funniest was Captain James Murphy (a famous Fenian). He enlisted in the 20th Massachusetts, having spent time as a sergeant in the U.S. regulars. He was immediately appointed the head of a school to teach drill and musketry to the regiment. Another was Colonel Tim O'Meara, 42nd N.Y. and  90th Illinois. ) O'Meara was a regular in New Mexico before the war.
