Wow, this is a stirring anthem! Francis Hughes is certainly a legendary figure from that time, in both the nationalist / unionist communities in Ireland. He had courage, convictions, and cool under duress -- in spades.

What do you all think of this song, and this artist, who hails from Portland, Oregon?
Interesting to note that these new "anthems" are being created largely by Irish-American songwriters. Frances Hughes came from a long line of Republican heroes. I think this a fitting tribute. 59 days without food... R.I.P. mo chara
On one of Robbie O'Connell's early albums, he had two songs that touched on the issue of who exactly is Irish. In one, an Irish folk singer is ridiculed by an Irish American as not being Irish, because he doesn't sing "Danny Boy." In another, "Two Nations," an Irish American pipes up about "The Troubles" while sitting in a pub in Ireland and is challenged to a fistfight because he's a Yank and what do Yanks know anyway.
Heritage is heritage, and I think it's great that Irish-Americans like Rovics care enough about their heritage to include it in their art. The beauty of a web site like TNWG is that it's a place for Irish and Irish-Americans to mingle electronically. Thank you, Gerry and all those who make this site possible and thanks to all contributors. I'm learning; I'm learning.
Jim, awesome accolade. Thank you, and please spread the word about WG, to family, friends, colleagues and social network followers!

I'm spreading the message. First heard about WG from a flyer distributed at Sober St. Patrick at Regis H.S. NYC in on March 16 and have talked about the site to family, friends, and fellow members of Amergael, an Irish-American club at the Jersey Shore.
Jim, would the club like to set up a 'clubhouse' for its members within The Wild Geese? We'd love to have them feel most at home here, surrounded by both friends they've developed and friends they haven't met yet. Let me know. I can tell you more.

Gerry, I'd like to go private message to you now. How do I do that??
