The Annals of Inisfallen, one of Ireland’s oldest manuscripts which is believed to have been written between the 12th and 15th century, is housed in Oxford University’s Bodleian Library.  It was created by the monks of Innisfallen Abbey on an island near Killarney.

Our Irish Arts and Heritage Minister Jimmy Deenihan is requesting that they be returned and be housed at Killarney House near where they were written.   This is not the first attempt by the Irish Government to attain the Annals.

Suzanne de la Rosa a spokeswoman for the library said “The Bodleian Library is not aware of any approach requesting that the annals are returned to Ireland.”

Do you believe they belong in Ireland?

hard to say. Given the Irish state's poor track record for preserving its own culture (Viking Dublin, Tara etc) it might be better if the annals are stored abroad. Proper security would have to be provided. You are not supposed to use flash photography with the Book of Kells but I see happen all the time.

I see no reason why they can't be housed in Ireland as long as they uphold standards as strict as the Bodleian Library.  That said,  should the Mona Lisa be housed in Italy?

The Cathach is the one of the oldest books in Ireland and is at the Royal Irish Academy but I would not consider its security as being great. Museums outside of Dublin tend to have very poor security and lack facilities to keep antiquities in good condition.
