Irish Square Dance
I was in Ballyvaughan recently and had the opportunity to attend a local Irish Music show. Part of the program was a dance by four couples that very closely resembled what I would call an American Appalachian Square Dance. The dancers wore cloth masks with cut out eye holes and belts and hats made with straw.
Can anyone tell me the historical or cultural significance of the masks and the straw apparel?

It was sponsored by the Ballyvaughan Community Development Group, a local civic organization, and the show was entitled "Clare's Finest Misicians in Concert." We really enjoyed it.
