I am 4th generation Chicago Irish. I am trying to find out where in Ireland my 2x great grandparents were from. I've narrowed two of them down to the County's they were from (Cork and Limerick) but two others I've no idea.

My Irish ancestors were part of the Famine Irish. They all came between 1845 and 1854. They all (4) settled in Chicago and I believe that they all met and married in Chicago. Unfortunately the Chicago Fire, 1871, destroyed most of the Chicago records (Naturalization at the Court Houses) and the Catholic Cathedral records, where I believe both sets were married and some of the children baptized. I've found some siblings at St.Patricks and some at Immaculate Conception.

I'm wondering if anyone knows how to research the Irish specific to Chicago pre 1871 fire.

My ancestors are Michael Egan (?), Katherine Driscoll (Cork ) Catherine Howard, (?) and John Bluett - Limerick.

After considering this  problem, I think you would have to search it out by a trip to the National Archives''''''and may come to nothing.......I'll try to think of a Plan B but am pessimistic

Hi Michael,

So I guess you didn't find John Bluett in the Civil War records. Thanks for looking for me. Yea, a trip to the National Archives would be fun, but it's not a reality for me at this time. I'll just keep plugging along and see what I can come up with based on children.

you might track down lawrence j mccaffrey and thomas hachey

Hi Bill,

Was this message for me? I don't know who lawrence j mccaffrey and thomas hachey are.

thanks,

Hi Bill,

Thank you for the tip. I've orders some of their books and look forward to gleening some information from them.

Hi Annette,

I tried both irishfaminelady@aol.com, and thefaminelady@aol.com and both were bounced back. Thanks for the effort though.

Do you have dates for Michael Egan and John Bluett? I found several military records of both names but need birth dates  to narrow them down.

Hi Ann,

Thanks for looking into this for me.

Michael Egan is my biggest problem. He was born in Ireland anywhere from 1808 to 1813. He died in 1885

John Bluett was born in Bruff, Limerick in 1832 -1908

I've found a number of spelling for his name too. Blewett, Blewit, Blewitt, Blute. as well as Bluett.

I have a cousin here in Illinois who I believe could help you in looking around Limerick where she has been in search of our family which she found, I will ask her if I can give out her addy

John Meehan

Thanks John,

I can use all the help I can get. My Limerick relation has a unique last name, Bluett, and consequently, I've made contact with two distant but potential cousins in Chicago. We have even made a contact in Limerick. Our problem is the connection between our Chicago Bluett and the Irish Bluett.

Thanks again,

~mary
