Chance National Library of Israel Discovery: Ireland's 1st Chief Rabbi Rescue of Holocaust Survivors

A recent acquisition of personal archives of the well-known Jerusalem attorney Alexander Amdur includes documents of Rabbi Yitzhak Halevi Herzog’s historic mission to redeem Jewish children taken in by Christian institutions and families.

Herzog was the first Chief Rabbi of Ireland.  He was a strong supporter of the struggle for Irish independence and a close personal friend of Eamon de Valera, who at times used the Rabbi’s house in Dublin as a hiding spot.

More information here:

Rabbi Herzog and his son former Israeli President Chaim Herzog are featured in the documentary film Shalom Ireland.
