O'Meara was killed three years later at the Battle of Missionary Ridge, in command of Dunne's (Chicago) Irish Legion.

An account I have in my files describes how Ulysses S. Grant visited O'Meara's coffin before it was shipped back to New York for burial, and was seen to wipe tears from his eyes. I'll try to find it.

His marble gravestone, pictured in the second story, is badly weathered and largely illegible. I recorded some of the text two decades ago.

I wonder if anyone will recall O'Meara's heroic role in the Balls Bluff fighting during this weekend's events.
