Event Description

In September of this year, Ireland's Great Hunger Museum (An Gorta Mor) opened at Quinnipac University in CT. In the midst of reading The Graves are Walking by John Kelly (a good read!) I'm now more than ever intrigued to make a visit.  Hope you will too!

THE GREAT HUNGER MUSEUM

The Great Hunger Museum is home to the world’s largest collection of visual art, artifacts and printed materials relating to the starvation and forced emigration that occurred throughout Ireland from 1845 to 1850. Works by noted contemporary Irish artists are featured, as well as a number of important 19th and 20th-century paintings. Begun in 1997, this dynamic collection continues to grow.

ITINERARY

The proposed itinerary for our visit will be:

10am - pick up at meeting spot (TBD shortly but will be somewhere in midtown Manhattan either Penn or Grand Central)

12pm - approximate arrival to the Museum.

1pm/130pm - depart to the Arnold Bernhard Library to view documents related to the Great Famine and meet with the librarian.  We MAY even be able to conduct some research but this will be confirmed.

1:30pm - we can stop for a quick bite in the area OR if the group prefers we head back into the city and have a catch up on our visit.

4pm (or thereabouts) - arrival back into Manhattan

For more information please visit the museum's website: www.thegreathunger.org/museum

COSTS

The Museum does not charge admission, only asks for donations.  The cost for this trip is solely attributed to the return van/bus transport I will be securing.  It works out so far to $30 per person, based on a minimum of 14 in attendance.  Please note: while I am taking the charge now as I will be committed to the booking as the date draws near, if it is cancelled you will be fully refunded for the cost of the bus transport bar any fees that PayPal charges ($1.20).  Email me directly if you wish to make alternate payments to Paypal (as they do charge a fee).
