In the mid-19th century, Ireland suffered years of profound deprivation. Whether you call it An Gorta Mór, the Great Hunger, or the Famine, we can agree that the Irish learned the devastation of poverty and hunger through this historical period, and migrated in droves to America as a result.
The daughter of Irish immigrants -- Marguerite Boylan, PhD -- founded our local Catholic Charities 100 years ago. Her commitment and dedication to work with the vulnerable and all those who live in the shadows of our society clearly were formulated through the Irish experience and perspective.
