Father Felix Varela was greatly appreciated as the advocate of Irish immigrants in New York from the 1830s to 1850s, including the famine period. He was exiled from Cuba because of his advocacy of independence, abolition of slavery and equal education of women. Introduced to Gaelic by his first teacher, an Irish priest, the became fluent.
The celebration of his life will be led by Bishop Osvaldo Cisneros, of the Diocese of Brooklyn.
