Fascinating and Hilarious Entertainment

I’m celebrating new membership in The Wild Geese. Recently I read Colm Herron’s A Maiden So Bewitching and asked him if I might post a comment. Having read other of his books and essays, how could I help but notice right away that this is something different – totally different – from his earlier work. For example, there have never been guided tours of beautiful Inishowen and delightful, often buried, nuggets of its history to compare with what is contained between the covers of Herron’s little masterpiece. This consummate storyteller invites us along on the tour as he explores the adventures and misadventures of a lifelong, gender-juggling genius, one Lexie Cheddy. Sometimes deeply complex, often so hilarious that I found myself laughing till I was sore, this is a fascinating portrait of a hero-antihero’s ripening mind. I also found myself questioning, mulling, wondering, but all the time rib-ticklingly entertained. Way to go, Colm Herron. What’s next?
