A priest has warned his parishioners against visiting fortune-tellers during the Lisdoonvarna Matchmaking Festival, saying it opens their souls to evil.

Weigh in on whether you think it's only a bit of fun, mortal sin ... or are you a psychic fan?

As someone who grew up with one of the neighbors being a teacup reader,  I see it as just a bit of fun.  I also remember reading the Wild Geese article on St Malachy and I note that he was somewhat of a fortune teller himself.

Its all in good fun... and perhaps there is a grain of truth in what they say... but you would think the Psychics would have seen it coming? ;-)

All joking aside...my maternal grandmother was a seer. If she said don't travel on a particular day, woe be the person who didn't heed her advice. Many a trip was postponed until her all clear was given

Many of the early "saints" had a gift... seeing....healing... Fechin raised a lintel of many tons...with his prayers alone...or so its said... Brigid was a goddess long before she became a saint

Competition?

Some priests read their own horoscopes in the paper and look upon it as harmless fun, others adopt a more serious attitude.

I do however find the likes of Keith Barry disturbing. He was on the Brendan O'Connor Show recently and he was using a ouija board as a form of entertainment. His show which was promoting is called 'The Dark Side'.

Most people I know at home who like to get the palms read swear by the Pavees

Some people get offended when I point out that most Christian rituals have pagan roots.

I will say that I have a low tolerance for "dabblers" ...and  absolutely none for those who utilize ouija boards "just for fun"... Same for the dime a dozen Psychics and their 900 hotlines...

But that doesn't mean that there are not legitimate psychics...for there are ...they just don't advertise... there's no need

I was taught to respect the craft at a very early age.

I am becoming that person by whom I was fascinated as a child... She of the long flowing hair and scarves and the sort... She who paid no heed to the whispers and glances as she walked into the church...smiling at all...greeting the wee ones with a soft whisper in their ear... and the elders with a hug or a nod... She who took no gruff off any of the Parish priests... and then on Mondays...oh what delight to visit her house with my Gran or my Grandma... always a mystery of scents ...cats of every colour at her door...around her feet... laughter...troubles shared...black cat purring at my feet... cookies and tea for me... a pouch of something herbal...a poultice perhaps...

I am at mass on Sundays...most Sundays... but I also answer people's requests for protection blends and the sort...I always have a cuppa on offer...and there is laughter and chat... and my cat... she is 14 now... her name is Magik

Dabblers and 900 hotlines not for me either.

All good points Bernie.  I particularly like your vision of an evolved 6th sense. Speaking of numbers do you remember the 7th son of the 7th son. Just looked it up and found this under Irish folklore belief.

The seventh son of a seventh son is gifted as a healer. There are several alleged cases of an Irish healer in Scranton, Pennsylvania. Paul Joseph Cawley was a seventh son of a seventh son and was known in this coal mining town for allegedly healing many skin diseases. The seventh son of a seventh son is part of a more general phenomenon known as the "cure" (sometimes also called the "charm")[

Maybe that's another feather to look forward to in our evolutionary cap.

The spoon bending is spooky stuff.  Is Geller still around?

Uri is still around...a bending minds with his illusions... I remember being allowed to stay up and watch whenever he came on the Tonight Show with Johny Carson here in the states. Yes...now, having said that, I am feeling old...LOL

You also have Christina Gallagher, a Catholic spiritualist and a woman not without her critics. Her official site:

I stopped in Lisdoonvarna 8/30/13, two days before the festival kick-off. I noticed the psychics lining up in the lots getting a spot, and pulling out their crystal balls. Naturally on holiday from New York, I got my palm read. Two things were immediately true.

1. (I had a camera strung around my neck.) She said my pictures will be displayed on a great wall and bring me much joy...I post on Facebook, one of the biggest walls known, and my pictures do bring me joy!

2. She said my name will be printed in a book, someone will write about me. I flew to NY on 8/31, and on 9/1 I performed at the Hooley on the Hudson in the pipe and drum band I belong to. A man from a local paper took my picture and printed it with my name in the paper!!

Pretty cool!

Pretty cool is right Theresa.  Here are some links about Pavee fortunetellers and an Irish 7th son of a 7th son who claims to be a healer.
