Welcome to The Wild Geese, Robert Emmett Maguire! I did not have the pleasure of seeing Avoca when I was there in November, but I agree Glendalough and the Wickow Mountains are beautiful. How long did you spend in that area? Favorite memories?
Hi, PJ! Nice to meet you.
I go to Ireland at least every couple of years and every year when I can swing it. Whenever I am in Dublin I make a special effort to get to Wicklow and especially Glendalough and the area of the River Avoca. The little town of Avoca was very well known in Ireland as the setting for a popular TV show called Ballykissangel. Don't have a clue whether it's still on. Anyway, the whole of Wicklow is just so pastoral. And Glendalough just takes my breath away.
I'm a birder (casual at best) and a couple of years ago, I decided to splurge and hire a very well known birder in Ireland named Eric Dempsey. He lives in Wicklow and we (along with my cousin Geraldine) traipsed around the entire county for the entire day. A singular experience.
Can't wait to go back.
Slan go foill agus...
Le meas,
Robert
Robert, how incredible. Sounds like a wonderful experience. Funny thing, when we were at Glendalough there was a photographer set up in the cemetery photographing birds. I realize now that I actually did quickly go through Avoca. We were on a tour bus and the guide pointed out that Ballykissangel was filmed there. I used to love watching that show. I had forgotten the name of the real town. I have a cousin Geraldine too...must be an Irish requirement. I live across the street from a nature preserve and though I am not a birder, I can see the appeal...it is quite fascinating to see all the types of birds in nature when I go hiking.
Have a great day.
PJ
