My Irish Families

Echoes From the Great Dismal Swamp

My blog gives some details about my O'Sheal family.

I started researching the O'Sheal family in 2003 and have written and published two family books, but the books do not give further family history prior to John O'Sheal and Alice Apsley.

My 7th great-grandfather was John O'Sheal who was living in London, Middlesex, England, and married June 1688 to Alice Apsley in St. Katherine's By the Tower. (Evidently, John O'Sheal was Protestant.)

I have suspected John O'Sheal was a relative of Luc/Luke O'Sheal in Nantes, France, but I have no proof. I also suspect he was possibly the son of one Daniel O'Sheal, who appears in some of the old Irish records in the year 1659. I suspect Daniel O'Sheal as my my ancestor because of the name--Daniel.

John O'Sheal's grandson was named Daniel O'Sheal, and this Daniel O'Sheal was my 5th great-grandfather (b.1719-1730). Daniel's father was Col. David O'Sheal. To clarify my line: John O'Sheal; David O'Sheal; Daniel O'Sheal (my 5th great-grandfather).

I have documents proving my descent from Col. David O'Sheal, and my brother's Y-DNA matched 100% with other males who descend from Col. David O'Sheal. My autosomal DNA reported I am 33% Irish, and I know of a few other Irish families in my ancestry: Dennington, McDowell, Boyle, and I am sure I have other Irish ancestry not yet proved.

Any clues or help regarding my O'Sheal family is more than appreciated!!
