The Dromkeen Ambush: Down Into the Mire in County Limerick

As the year of 1921 began, the Irish War of Independence was entering a new, more intense and more vicious phase. In Co. Limerick the East and Mid-Limerick Brigades ambushed a two lorry convoy of RIC and Black & Tans of February 3rd in Dromkeen, killing eleven of them. Not all of them died during the fighting. With their proclamation that any Volunteers captured with weapons would be executed, the British government had ensured that the fight would descend even further “into the mire.”
