'The Irish Buddhist: The Forgotten Monk Who Faced Down the British Empire'

Born in Dublin in 1856, Laurence Carroll worked his way across the Atlantic, hoboed across the States from New York to Chicago via Montana to San Francisco, worked as a sailor on the Pacific Mail to Yokohama and wound up in Asia, where he became an anti-colonial celebrity and one of the first Buddhist monks who hailed from the Western Hemisphere. He had five aliases, 25 missing years in his biography, was tried for sedition, put under police surveillance, became the subject of a proto-extradition request, faked his death and eventually disappeared.
