the solution to the problem of whether the irish or the mexican immigrant is more special is very simple. only those with direct line of vision to the us of a, not counting horizons. should be allowed in. that includes mexicans, irish canaqdians, caribbean islanders and west coast africans. that will give us more than enough to keep this place going. after all, we don't refer to new york as the 33rd county lightly. oh, and one proviso: to fend off the jingoes from the southwest, we will…

Oh, and the bit about the "Celtic Tiger" being an ARTIFICIAL boom ... that's absolutely correct, P.J. And while folks certainly enjoy the rewards in the moment when something like that happens, it's never going to end well. Ireland did not create that economy via natural and sustainable means. It was too much, too soon ... and the long-term effects have indeed turned out to be harmful to Ireland in manifold ways.

I have to give you a hearty round of applause for this piece, P.J. You absolutely nailed the situation from top to bottom. Everything from the ridiculousness shown by government to the ridiculousness shown by many private individuals when it comes to the "Celtic Tiger." Living here for the past three years and hearing folks talk about how things were during those years -- and seeing the contrast now -- it's fascinating.
Many (if not most) people became spoiled during "The Tiger." And most of those same people refuse to blame anyone but bankers and politicians. That's far too convenient. If the weather is bad, blame the bankers. If the Irish soccer team loses a match, must be the bankers' and politicians' fault! C'mon ... it's just silly.

Also, what you said about America being an easy target for folks in Ireland (and elsewhere) to pick on is absolutely spot-on. I am constantly hearing people (both Americans and Irish) complain about the immigration policies in the U.S. As someone who is doing it in reverse (i.e. an American trying to gain citizenship in Ireland), let me tell you that Irish policies make the American ones look fantastic. But nobody ever hears the other side, do they? Nope.

For some illogical reason, the U.S. is held to a higher standard than any other nation. And as you said, P.J., if it weren't for American corporate investment AND American tourism in Ireland, where would Ireland be today? It's difficult to even imagine.
I, too, was met with disregar…tag:thewildgeese.irish,2014-06-12:6442157:Comment:986402014-06-12T21:29:48.199ZBit Devinehttps://thewildgeese.irish/profile/BitDevine

Interestingly, as a resident of the American Southwest, I more often hear the argument that we should give special consideration to the Latino immigrants... whereas on the East Coast, where family & friends reside, I often here the "Shamrock Special" argument
An important viewpoint, PJ.
An important viewpoint, PJ. I suspect this statement may prove to be very controversial: "Yet the same people see no irony on insisting the American government should give special consideration to Irish undocumented immigrants above those from other countries. (Well, who else sends shamrock?)" The latter might prove to be a very interesting and important discussion.
